When Dad Became Joan - with Cath Lloyd
Sunday Apr 23, 2023
Sunday Apr 23, 2023
Cath Lloyd is the daughter of male to female trans parent. In 1987 her Dad suddenly announced that he was going to undergo gender reassignment treatment. This was a total shock to the whole family, except for her Mum who had known about her Dad's gender dysphoria for 10 years. There were no warning signs. Once Cath finally got through her bereavement process for her Dad, she wrote her book, "When Dad Became Joan" to support other people going through gender reassignment.

Sexology in Samoa - with Dr Paul Vasey
Monday Apr 10, 2023
Monday Apr 10, 2023
Dr Paul L. Vasey is Professor and Board of Governors Research Chair in Culture, Organization and Society at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. His research has focused on understanding the development, evolution and psychobiology of gender diversity and sexual orientation. He has studied female homosexual behavior in Japanese monkeys for the past 33 years. This work has been described as “transformative” by leading scholars in the field. For 19 years, he has conducted annual fieldwork in Samoa, a culture where feminine same-sex attracted males are identified as a “third” gender, called fa’afafine, that is distinct from cisgender men and women. In 2015, Dr. Vasey established another fieldsite in the Istmo region of Oaxaca, Mexico. In this area, the indigenous Zapotec people recognize feminine same-sex attracted males as a third gender called, muxe. This work has been complemented by his long-term research on cisgender gay men in Canada and Japan. His cross-cultural research has been described by external reviewers as “cutting-edge” and “stunningly original.” Vasey is one of only a handful Canadian scholars to receive research grants from NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC, as well as NIH. His research has been reported on in hundreds of newspapers and magazines worldwide including the New York Times, Oprah, Playboy, National Geographic and TIME. He has been interviewed on camera for several television documentaries, most recently by the American journalist Katie Couric, for the National Geographic documentary, Gender Revolution, in which he spoke about the special role fa’afafine play in promoting the well-being of their families.

Autohetero - with Phil Illy
Sunday Feb 05, 2023
Sunday Feb 05, 2023
Phil Illy is an autoheterosexual author who, in his words, “aims to mainstream autoheterosexuality and destigmatize it so that more of his kind can jettison shame and live in union with their inner cross-gender spirit.” Prior to writing a soon to be released book about his sexual orientation, Phil received degrees in physics and mechanical engineering before retiring to Portland, Oregon, where he became best known for his skill at handstand twerking and juggling hula hoops.
Phil's website: http://autoheterosexual.com/
Some terms and references are used in this episode that may not be clear to the average listener. Here is a brief glossary of terms:
"Allo" means other, or external.
"Auto" means self, or internal.
"Gyno" means female.
"Andro" means male.
"Philia" means love (or, less euphemistically, sexual attraction).
"Meta" means self-referential
A typical heterosexual male is technically "allogynephilic". The vast majority of people are, in sexologic terms, alloheterosexual.
But a male who is attracted to the thought or image of himself as female is "autogynephilic", while a female who is attracted to herself as male is "autoandrophilic". These last two are what our guest has termed "autoheterosexual".
The final term above, meta, is used in this context to describe the type of external sexual behaviors of autoheterosexuals, who often experience (and act upon) homosexual desires as a means of validating their self-perception as the opposite sex. For example, an autogynephilic male is not attracted to other males (not alloandrophilic), but sexual behavior with males serves as a validation of the self as female. That is metaandrophilia.
